FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE UMBRI, FROM THE SPRINGS OF THE TIBER RIVER TO THOSE OF CLITUNNO

“The Umbria you would not expect” could be the subheading of this trip. Reading the travel plan, you will clearly understand why we decided to enrich our Italy Itineraries’ list with Umbria region, better known for its hamlets, olive trees and good food. This unusual itinerary is the result of a collaboration with Gabriele Salari, environmental journalist and author of two books dedicated to Umbria and another one on the hidden naturalistic paradises in Italy. This itinerary brings us along Umbria’s waterways, even though it starts in Romagna, precisely at the thermal springs of Bagno di Romagna, next to the border with Tuscany. On the hillslides of Mount Fumaiolo, we will discover the spring of the river Tiber, surrounded by a beech forest. Lake Trasimeno will offer birdwatching opportunities, ancient Romans waterworks and a pleasant boat trip with local fishermen reaching the little islands. We will then continue to explore Umbria’s waterways and history following the Roman aqueduct from Collepino to Spello, ending up to the springs of Clitunno, which were sacred to ancient Romans. We will also have the chance to admire the authenticity and architectural value of Bevagna, Assisi, Spello and Spoleto, among other smaller but not less evocative hamlets. Last but not least, exclusive little moments such as a medieval dinner inside an antique palace will add even more value to this unexpected experience.

TRAVEL PLAN 2017

DAY 1: CESENA – BAGNO DI ROMAGNA

Meeting at Cesena railway station with the guide and the driver.
Transfer to Bagno di Romagna and hotel check-in. The accommodation offers an old thermal spring inside, which was discovered by ancient Umbri.
Tour of the village and of the town museum. Almost not affected by the decades of development, Bagno di Romagna is very authentic, with views of Medieval and Renaissance taste.
The day ends with relaxing in the hotel’s thermal pool,  dinner (on your own) and overnight stay

DAY 2: Bagno di Romagna – Tiber springs – Castiglione del Lago – Passignano del Trasimeno

The morning starts reaching Mount Fumaiolo. Around its 1,268 metres-high peak we will find the springs of Tiber, running then through Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio and finally flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The hillsides of Monte Fumaiolo give also birth to Savio and Marecchia rivers.
After visiting Tiber springs, transfer to Castiglione del Lago, located on a calcareous rock headland.
Lunch (on your own).
Visit to the Castle and Palazzo della Corgna, the most important palace in Castiglione del Lago and most relevant museum in the area, presenting several rooms decorated with Renaissance frescos by Pomarancio.
Arrival in Passignano del Trasimeno and hotel check in.
Dinner (not included) and overnight stay.

DAY 3: PASSIGNANO DEL TRASIMENO (TRASIMENO LAKE)

The day is dedicated to exploring Trasimeno Lake, a true natural paradise where birdwatchers observe herons, ducks, cormorants and grebes.
We will share the experience of birdwatching inside the Oasi La Valle, where you can also admire the waterworks built by the ancient Romans.
The surrounding area is distinguished by hills and forests together with sunflowers and corn fields and olive trees and vineyards.
The fishermen will bring us on a boat trip, giving a demonstration of fishing in the lake.
Visit of Isola Polvese and Isola Maggiore and their meaningful historical and artistic landscapes.
Lunch (not included) on Isola Maggiore, and then back to the hotel for  dinner (not included)  and overnight stay.

DAY 4 : PASSIGNANO DEL TRASIMENO – BEVAGNA – ASSISI

In the morning we leave for Bevagna, a tipical Medieval town surrounded by ancient walls.
After visiting the town, autonomous lunch and transfer to Assisi, passing through Rasiglia, a very small village in the mountains next to Foligno crossed by several waterways: the Menotre’s waters run here through water works, thanks to which the town is rich in waterfalls and streams.
Arrival in Assisi and accommodation in a farm.

NB: if the weather is favourable, instead of Rasiglia we will admire the lavender fields in Cannara, visiting a plant nursery and stopping in a winery for a tasting of Sagrantino di Montefalco.

DAY 5: ASSISI

The day is dedicated to the well-known Roman town of Assisi, symbol of peace and birthplace of one of the world’s most loved and venerated saint: San Francesco, who was born in Assisi in 1182.
We will visit the Forest of San Francesco, Basilica di San Francesco, the underground Roman town and the Roman thermal baths.
Lunch is  on you own.
Dinner is in the farm and the evening sees an exclusive concert from the contemporary singer-songwriter Massimo Liberatori. Overnight stay.

DAY 6: ASSISI – MONTE SUBASIO – ASSISI

In the morning we leave for Collepino, a small village next to Spello and in the middle of Subasio Park, at an altitude of 600 meters.
Visit of the Medieval castle and stroll along the Roman aqueduct from Collepino to Spello, around 5 kilometers.
Visit of Spello and  lunch (not included). Located between Assisi and Foligno on a rock spur of Monte Subasio, Spello is one of the best place in the area for admiring ancient Roman architecture: the ancient walls, the ruins of the theater, amphitheater, thermae and the original gates (Consolare, Urbica and Venere). Transfer to Foligno, with a unique opportunity to visit Palazzo Trinci, which presents the wonderful frescoes by Gentile da Fabriano from the 15th century, and to enjoy a Medieval dinner inside the palace.
